Paintings Available At Broadway Contemporary Art Gallery
I have been working as a professional artist for over 10 years. My work has been featured in House & Garden magazine. Solo exhibitions include "Atmosphere" at Broadway Contemporary Art gallery in 2024 and Artist in Residence. I have had work selected for various local shows such as Rugby Open and the prestigious Broadway Arts Festival Exhibition Finalists Show 2024.
Having started out as a watercolourist I am now a painter in oils having been taught by the eminent artist Martin Kinnear Royal College of Art.
Artistic influences are artists of the past and present such as Rembrandt, Constable, Turner, Peter Krøyer, Edward Seago, Edward Wesson, Fred Cuming, Kurt Jackson, David Sharpe and Gareth Edwards.
I favour painting methods such as grisailles, glazing, scumbling and strong tonal contrasts.
My subject matter is influenced by memories of East Anglian fenland skies, seascapes and landscape. I am also inspired by the landscape of Scandinavia, Scotland and Alaska as well as the emotions and experiences of life.
Striving to create pieces that are both visually powerful and emotionally impactful makes
painting an emotive, meditative and creative pursuit.
I begin each piece with a vision in mind, but allow the materials and my instincts to guide me as I work. I believe that the process of creating art should be just as fulfilling as the finished piece.
Using my own photos and references which are usually a few simple tonal line sketches made on location, I use these back in the studio to paint a grisaille or simple colour under-painting in oil. Adding glazes later I allow the painting to evolve and very quickly the initial photos/reference point is forgotten as the painting develops itself.
For me my memories of place become symbolic of an internal emotional landscape inspired by the beauty and forces of nature.
